Healthy Foods for Young Families
WIC Director O’Brien presented to the board on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). She shared about food choices, services, recent changes, data, special diets, families, the farmers market component, WIC smartphone application, and some possible upcoming changes.
WIC serves over 2700 participants in five counties in southeast Iowa. Clinic locations are open anywhere from one to every business day of the month depending on location. A staff of nurses, dietitians, and nutritionists meet with pregnant mothers and caregivers providing screenings, certification for benefits, and referrals. Mothers, children and caregivers receive funds on an electronic benefit card (EBT card) where they can purchase qualifying healthy foods at any participating retailer.
