Parents As Teachers

Parents As Teachers (PAT) is an in-home family support program serving Des Moines and Louisa counties.  Funding for the program is through Iowa Department of Education Shared Visions and Believe In Children Early Childhood Iowa.

Parents as Teachers has a vision---that all children will learn, grow and develop to reach their full potential, and that parents are their earliest and best teachers.

At its core Parents as Teachers is relationship-based and parenting-focused.  PAT is brought to parents in their homes by trained Parent Educators whose goal is to help them build on their own strengths---using the most up-to-date research on brain science, child development and early learning---as they interact with their children.

PAT serves children prenatal through five and incorporates the following components:

  • Personal Home Visits by a Certified Parent Educator
  • Developmental Screening
  • Group Connection Events
  • Resource Network
  • Family Goal Setting

If you have questions or an interest in the Parents As Teachers program contact the Des Moines/Louisa County Coordinated Intake System at 319-753-8290 or Cheryl Flaatten, Program Director at 319-753-0193.
